By now most everyone is fairly familiar with the term osteoporosis and know that it is a loss of bone density leading to increased fracture risk. Many people associate osteoporosis with a lack of calcium, but there are many other nutrients necessary for strong bones- magnesium, Vit D, C, K, bioflavinoids, riboflavin, folic acid, strontium, boron, etc. When these nutrients are deficient they can cause visible signs and symptoms that one can be on the lookout for. If you have these symptoms it would be wise to be checked for a possible deficiency since you may not be ingesting and/or absorbing enough of a needed building block for strong bone. Below are some to be aware of:
- muscle spasms-magnesium, calcium, potassium
- muscle aches, muscle weakness, and bone pain-Vit. D
- cracks at corner of the mouth-B vits, especially riboflavin, zinc
- bumpy skin on the back of the arms-essential fatty acids, Vit. A
- easy bruising-Vit. K or C, bioflavinoids
- periodontal disease-Vit C, D, bioflavinoids, folic acid, calcium, riboflavin
